How to Choose a Design Style that's Right for Your Space

So you know you would like a change but you are not sure where to start. How do you decide what you want to achieve in a designed space? Here are a few questions to ask yourself that might help you:

  1. How do you want to feel in your space:

Did you know that you can feel emotions in a space?

Look at your space and ask yourself how you want to feel in it. – peaceful, calm, vibey, energetic, romantic. And then build your ideas around that.

  1. Colours that you like to live with:

What are your favorite colours?– do you love neutrals, black and white, colour? Often it helps to think about the colours that you mostly wear. Those are the colours you are naturally drawn to. I personally like to live with fairly neutral colours and the odd pop of colour or interest. I have a friend who loves bright and vibey and her clothes and home reflect that.

  1. How is the room going to be used?

This should be fairly easy to define. Is the space a dining room, a bedroom, a workspace. Do you want it to be multi-purpose?

  1. What styles appeal to you?

If you scroll through Pinterest, what “looks” catch your eye? Scandanavian, Modern Farmhouse, Minimalist, Traditional?

  1. Have you created a board on Pinterest?

Pick things out on Pinterest that appeal to you for your space and pin them on a board. Sometimes a very clear pattern emerges when you look at all the pins together

  1. A perfect world

Close your eyes and visualize - if life was perfect, which we know it isn’t, but if it was, what would your space look like?

There are no right or wrong answers, but as you answer these questions you may find that they help point you in the right direction as to what design style is going to work for you in your space.
